The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially endorsed India’s proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), approving the bid during a Special General Meeting in the capital on Wednesday. Ahmedabad has been chosen as the proposed host city, marking the country’s first CWG hosting attempt since New Delhi 2010, where India secured second place with 101 medals, behind Australia’s 177.
This move is part of a broader strategy to position India for the 2036 Olympic Games, also envisioned for Ahmedabad. The IOA has already filed an Expression of Interest for the 2030 CWG, and the final bid submission must be completed before the August 31 deadline. With Canada recently withdrawing from the race, India’s chances of securing the event have significantly improved.
The decision follows a June visit by an Indian delegation — including IOA President PT Usha, officials from the Union Sports Ministry, and representatives of the Gujarat state government — to London to meet with Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) officials. The discussions focused on understanding the hosting framework, bidding procedures, and necessary preparations to secure the rights.
In a reciprocal move, Commonwealth Sport officials, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, inspected Ahmedabad’s proposed venues earlier this year and met with Gujarat state authorities. A larger Commonwealth delegation is expected to return later in August for further evaluations.
The ultimate decision on the 2030 host city will be made by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in late November in Glasgow. Should Ahmedabad win the bid, it will be India’s second time hosting the multi-sport event, the first being the 2010 edition in New Delhi.
