Canva, a leading graphic design platform and a major competitor to Adobe, has seen remarkable adoption in India. In 2024 alone, users in the country created around 530,000 presentations daily. The platform is also widely used for designing resumes, social media posts, and pitch decks.
Cameron Adams, co-founder and chief product officer at Canva, highlighted India’s growing significance in the company’s expansion strategy. The Australian firm, last valued at $32 billion, is aiming to reach 1 billion users worldwide. “India will play a crucial role in achieving this milestone,” Adams stated in an interview with TOI.
Canva was founded in 2012 in Sydney and launched its first product a year later with the vision of making design accessible to everyone. While its growth started slowly, the platform gained momentum, reaching 1 million users within 18 months. Today, it serves 220 million users globally.
India has become one of Canva’s most important markets, recently climbing from the fifth to the fourth most popular. The country’s user adoption is outpacing many other regions, prompting Canva to invest heavily in local operations. Adams noted that these investments have delivered significant returns, reinforcing India’s role in Canva’s global strategy.
Addressing concerns about India’s proposed digital personal data protection laws, Adams mentioned that similar regulations are emerging globally, particularly in Europe. He expressed confidence that Canva’s existing infrastructure can adapt to these requirements, ensuring secure data management across regions.
Regarding data storage in India, Adams shared that Canva is actively exploring various technical solutions, including structuring its services to enable data replication across multiple locations. While he did not confirm specific plans for India, he assured that the company is committed to developing systems that support data localization worldwide.
