In its annual report, global hiring platform Indeed revealed a noteworthy 7.40% increase in blue-collar worker recruitment in India in 2023. The study, spanning January to November, involved insights from 1,223 employers, 2,671 blue-collar jobseekers, and 2,637 white-collar jobseekers.
Indeed’s blue-collar hiring tracker highlighted logistics, construction, real estate, tourism, and hospitality as sectors with significant job opportunities. Kolkata led in hiring growth, followed by Pune and Chandigarh, emphasizing evolving dynamics in India’s blue-collar workforce.
The survey links job growth in Tier-II cities to SMB expansion, urbanization, and a cost-effective labor market. Gen Z candidates are preferred by blue-collar employers (49%), while white-collar employers seek millennials (41%). Driving (53%) and machine operation (33%) are key skills, with teamwork (79%) and communication (79%) as crucial soft skills. Employers primarily hire for entry-level positions.
Looking forward, 42% express interest in AI integration in 2024, with 19% already implementing it. Indeed India’s Head of Sales, Ms. Sashi Kumar, highlights significant hiring growth in Tier-II cities in 2023 and advocates upskilling for a promising 2024.
