The Indian American Public Affairs Council (IAPAC) hosted its annual gala at the Junior League of Houston, focusing on the urgent mental health crisis in America. The event, with over 220 attendees, aimed to inspire dialogue and collective action in addressing mental health challenges.
Dr. Roopa Gir, President of IAPAC, welcomed guests and emphasized the need to reduce stigma and create culturally relevant solutions for diverse communities. The evening’s keynote address, delivered via video by Dr. Rahul Gupta, National Director for Drug Policy at the White House, highlighted the intersection of mental health and substance use, urging immediate action and compassion.
Anagha Surendran, who shared her personal battle with OCD and mental health issues, moved the audience with her courageous story. The panel discussion, featuring Senator Manka Dhingra, Wayne Young, and Dr. Stephen Glazier, focused on actionable solutions for reducing stigma and improving mental health care.
The event also showcased a fashion show inspired by the “nine rasas” (human emotions) and a stand-up comedy act by Dr. Shehzaad Batliwala, promoting themes of acceptance and belonging.
IAPAC honored Ashok Mago, Sonal Shah, and Senator Manka Dhingra for their advocacy work, and special recognition was given to IAPAC founders Jagat Kamdar, Randhir Sahni, and the late Rao Ratnala.
The success of the gala was driven by the generous support of sponsors such as the Blume Foundation and Karavalli Capital & Ventures. Dr. Roopa Gir remarked, “This evening demonstrated the power of community and collaboration in breaking the silence around mental health.”
IAPAC, founded in 1996, represents over 250,000 Indian Americans in Greater Houston, advocating for mental health, education, and social equity.
