The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is preparing to acknowledge Ramola R. Motwani, the chairwoman of Merrimac Ventures, a real estate firm based in South Florida, for her notable contributions to the business sector. Motwani is set to receive this honor during the association’s yearly award ceremony, slated to occur from April 4-6 in Washington, D.C., alongside ten other prominent figures from various fields across North America.
Terrence J. Giroux, the executive director of the Horatio Alger Association, praised Motwani as a philanthropist deeply committed to education, embodying the qualities esteemed by the association. He lauded her as a resilient and compassionate leader, emphasizing her role in transforming her late husband’s business into a prominent player in the hotel management and development industry.
Motwani’s journey began with her earning bachelor’s and law degrees in Mumbai, India, before relocating to Missouri with her husband to establish Sona Enterprises. After settling in Florida and acquiring the Merrimac Hotel, the couple ventured into managing several other hospitality properties. Following her husband’s passing, Motwani took the reins and expanded their enterprise single-handedly.
As the chairwoman of Merrimac Ventures, Motwani oversaw a diverse portfolio of real estate projects, completing billions of dollars’ worth of developments, with significant future endeavors on the horizon. Beyond her professional achievements, she co-founded the R. Motwani Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, aiming to inspire local youth to pursue careers in hospitality.
Motwani’s commitment to her community is evident through her involvement in various organizations, including the United Way of Broward County and the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County. She has received numerous accolades for her contributions, including recognition from the United States House of Representatives and induction into several halls of fame.
In expressing her gratitude for the recognition, Motwani emphasized the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity and pledged to support young scholars through the Horatio Alger Association’s initiatives. Established over 75 years ago, the association is dedicated to honoring individuals who have overcome challenges to achieve success while promoting higher education and philanthropy among youth.
