On Wednesday, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma set several new records, including becoming the first batter to hit 600 sixes in international cricket.
During India’s T20 World Cup opener against Ireland at the Nassau Stadium in New York, Rohit Sharma, known as the ‘Hitman’, climbed multiple records’ lists with his outstanding performance. Chasing a modest target of 97 runs on a challenging pitch, Rohit first surpassed the 4000-run mark in T20 internationals.
Needing just 26 runs to reach this milestone, Rohit achieved it in the 6th over of the chase, becoming only the third player, after Virat Kohli (4037) and Babar Azam (4023), to reach 4000 runs in T20Is.
In the 9th over, Rohit further distinguished himself by reaching 1000 T20 World Cup runs, making him only the third batter to do so after Kohli and Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene (1016).
Additionally, Rohit hit three sixes against the Irish bowlers, becoming the first batter to achieve 600 sixes in international cricket. With 4137 runs in Tests, 10709 in ODIs, and 4001* in T20Is, Rohit joined Virat Kohli (8848 in Tests, 13848 in ODIs, and 4038 in T20Is) in the elite group of players who have scored 4000 runs across all three formats.
Rohit retired hurt after scoring an impressive 52 runs in the 11th over. India eventually secured their tournament opener victory by 8 wickets.
