IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has received approval from its board for a significant aircraft order. On June 19, an official confirmed that IndiGo has placed an order for 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft, marking the largest order in the airline’s history. The purchase agreement was formalized at the Paris Air Show 2023, with the presence of IndiGo’s Board Chairman V Sumantran, CEO Pieter Elbers, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, and Christian Scherer, Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International.
According to an official statement from the airline, the specific engine selection for the order, as well as the mix of A320 and A321 aircraft, will be determined in due course. The statement highlighted that this order will ensure a consistent and substantial flow of aircraft deliveries for IndiGo between 2030 and 2035. Furthermore, it emphasized that this order not only represents IndiGo’s largest-ever aircraft order but also marks the largest single aircraft purchase made by any airline in partnership with Airbus.
Currently, IndiGo operates a fleet of over 300 aircraft, with previous orders for an additional 480 aircraft that are yet to be delivered within the present decade.
