Now streaming on Netflix, “Heeramandi” has received widespread acclaim and generated a substantial audience reaction. Celebrated director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has fulfilled his longstanding dream with the release of “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” marking his first venture into the OTT realm. Reflecting on his journey, Bhansali recounted a childhood visit to a film studio that sparked his passion for storytelling.
Bhansali shared his thoughts on the long journey to creating “Heeramandi,” revealing that he had wanted to make it 18 years ago. However, other projects kept taking precedence. He explained that after each film, he would reconsider “Heeramandi” but often found it too grand to fit into a standard movie runtime. At one point, he contemplated making it into two parts. Despite the challenges of creating a series, Bhansali expressed his gratitude and satisfaction at finally bringing his vision to life, noting the extensive planning and effort that spanned 14 years, including two years dedicated to its design.
The series delves into the cultural complexities of Heeramandi by portraying the lives of courtesans and their patrons. It features a stellar cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman. Set against the backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle in the 1940s, the narrative promises an epic saga of love, power, revenge, and freedom.
