Harleen Marwah, a Pediatric Resident Physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, holds the role of Founding Chair for Medical Students for a Sustainable Future. This group, comprising medical students, is dedicated to mitigating and tackling the health impacts associated with climate change. Marwah’s efforts in this regard were recognized when she received the 2020 Emerging Physician Leader Award from Health Care Without Harm. This accolade acknowledges individuals, like Marwah, who demonstrate a fervent dedication to sustainable healthcare practices and a strong commitment to combating climate change. With a background in engaging youth and addressing the nexus of healthcare and climate issues, Marwah brings valuable expertise to the Council.
During the inaugural meeting of the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council (WHEJAC) on March 30, 2021, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the administration’s dedication to addressing environmental justice and injustice comprehensively. She underscored the integral role of environmental justice in achieving broader societal goals such as health equity, economic fairness, racial equality, and educational opportunities. Harris expressed confidence in the council members’ contributions, emphasizing the importance of their insights, expertise, and lived experiences in guiding the administration’s efforts.
The establishment of WHEJAC represents a significant milestone as it marks the first time a Presidential advisory body has been specifically tasked with providing recommendations on environmental justice matters. WHEJAC operates as a Federal advisory committee, mandated to offer impartial advice and suggestions on addressing both current and historical environmental injustices. Its recommendations are directed to the White House Environmental Justice Interagency Council (IAC) and the Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). Marwah’s involvement in the council further strengthens its ability to address the complex intersections of youth engagement, healthcare, and climate change.
