Gujarat is set to achieve a significant milestone by becoming the first state in India to house a large-scale semiconductor manufacturing facility, as announced by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed between the state and Micron, a renowned computer storage chip maker, for the establishment of a USD 2.75 billion semiconductor facility near Ahmedabad, in Sanand.
Addressing the ‘Semicon India 2023’ event, Patel expressed his excitement over this development, emphasizing that the presence of Micron’s manufacturing unit in Gujarat is of great significance. He firmly believes that the state will successfully pave the way for a substantial semiconductor manufacturing setup in the country.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to bolster the semiconductor industry, Patel credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in driving India towards self-reliance. He acknowledged that the semiconductor sector has been a long-standing goal for India, which is now being realized due to the PM’s commitment to fostering indigenous capabilities.
To foster the growth of the semiconductor sector in Gujarat, the state government recently unveiled a dedicated ‘Semiconductor Policy.’ The policy is designed to attract prospective investors by offering a range of benefits and incentives, making Gujarat an attractive destination for semiconductor manufacturing. Patel highlighted Dholera SIR’s state-of-the-art facilities, positioning it as an ideal strategic location for the semiconductor industry, while extending a warm invitation to global players to invest in the state.
In addition to celebrating the semiconductor industry’s progress, the Chief Minister extended an invitation to industry leaders to participate in the tenth edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit scheduled for the following year. The event will provide a platform to explore further opportunities for collaboration and investment in the state.
