Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that the Union Cabinet has approved the opening of 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) to make quality school education more accessible across India. This move, in line with the National Education Policy, aims to benefit a large number of students while generating employment opportunities. Additionally, the Cabinet has sanctioned the establishment of 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) to extend residential and high-quality education to more regions.
The government’s decision to open these KVs and NVs represents a significant step toward ensuring inclusive education for all segments of society. These schools will offer affordable and quality education to over 82,000 students nationwide. The estimated budget for setting up the 85 KVs and expanding one existing KV is $706 million (Rs 5,872.08 crore) over eight years, starting from 2025-26. Currently, 1,256 Kendriya Vidyalayas operate in India and abroad, catering to over 1.35 million students.
Prime Minister Modi also highlighted efforts to boost connectivity, announcing the Cabinet’s approval for the Rithala-Kundli corridor under the fourth phase of the Delhi Metro project. Spanning 26.463 km with 21 elevated stations, this corridor will enhance commuting between Delhi and Haryana.
These decisions were finalized during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving education infrastructure and urban connectivity nationwide.
