The Indian government aims to significantly expand its aviation infrastructure by adding 50 new airports over the next five years, as announced by Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu. This ambitious project seeks to broaden India’s airport network, boosting the country’s connectivity and creating numerous job opportunities. Over the last ten years, India has seen its airport count double, reaching 157 operational facilities. Moving forward, projections suggest as many as 200 additional airports could be developed across the country over the next two decades.
Mr. Naidu’s announcement took place during the inauguration of Airbus India and South Asia’s new Training Centre in the capital, underscoring the government’s commitment to developing aviation infrastructure as a catalyst for economic and commercial growth. Expanding airport capacity not only enhances accessibility across regions but also bolsters commercial activities, generating widespread employment opportunities within the sector and beyond.
In addition, Mr. Vumlunmang Vualnam, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, highlighted that India’s air travel market is expected to witness substantial growth, with passenger numbers anticipated to double within five years. In 2022-23, approximately 220 million passengers traveled by air, a figure forecasted to rise sharply due to increased connectivity and the government’s sustained investments in the aviation sector.
Through these efforts, India is positioning itself to accommodate surging air traffic demand, enhance accessibility for travelers, and facilitate economic development by prioritizing aviation expansion and infrastructure development.
