The Connecticut chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO-CT) took part in a meaningful walkathon at Mill River Park in Stamford. This marked the chapter’s 16th year supporting the Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital, an initiative that helps provide cancer patients and their families with vital, cost-free services during treatment.
The funds raised through this event are instrumental in covering essential support services for patients. These include complimentary rides to and from treatment sessions, one-on-one nutritional counseling, acupuncture, and other forms of holistic care—all at no cost to those receiving treatment at the Bennett Cancer Center.
This year, GOPIO-CT proudly exceeded its fundraising target by collecting over $2,500. Every participating member contributed individually, showing collective dedication to this vital cause. The fundraising effort was spearheaded by GOPIO-CT board member Anita Mathur, who coordinated the chapter’s involvement in the event.
In addition to its financial contributions, GOPIO-CT also served as one of the event sponsors, joining hands with other nonprofit groups and corporate sponsors committed to supporting the Stamford community’s health needs.
Over the past 19 years, GOPIO-CT has emerged as a proactive and vibrant force in the region. It regularly hosts engaging events with policymakers, scholars, and community leaders. The chapter is well known for organizing youth mentorship programs, networking events, and cultural forums that showcase the rich traditions and accomplishments of the Indian diaspora.
GOPIO-CT functions as a non-partisan and inclusive civic organization, rooted in community service and cultural education. Its mission goes beyond charitable giving—it seeks to foster unity, awareness, and empowerment among people of Indian origin while also giving back to the wider community in Connecticut.
This year’s fundraising success is not just a financial achievement—it’s a reflection of the organization’s long-standing commitment to service, solidarity, and compassion. By participating in events like the Bennett Cancer Center walkathon, GOPIO-CT continues to demonstrate how community spirit can make a real difference in people’s lives.
