As Google commemorates 20 years in India, it is optimistic about the future, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) playing a key role, according to India MD Roma Datta Chobey. She noted that Google is aligning its strategy with India’s growth and goals. In an interview, Chobey emphasized that AI regulation is necessary but must balance user benefits and foster innovation, which is still at an early stage. India is a critical market for Google, with the company committing to areas such as AI, payments, Pixel phone manufacturing, and skill development.
Chobey highlighted Google’s extensive collaboration with Indian startups, with millions of apps hosted on Google Play and support for Android developers. The company remains committed to its India Digitization Fund, offering startup accelerators and AI-specific initiatives to boost innovation and access to technology.
Looking forward, Chobey said AI will be central to Google’s next phase in India, focusing on three pillars: democratizing information and opportunities, strengthening the AI ecosystem, and preparing the workforce for an AI-powered future. Google also unveiled several AI-driven advancements, including Indian language capabilities for Gemini Live, and updates to Google Lens, Maps, and Pay.
With over 10,000 employees in five Indian cities, Google sees India as a key market both for users and research development. The company recently began manufacturing its Pixel 8 phones in India, marking a significant milestone in its investment in the country. Google’s commitment to India extends to solving both local and global challenges, with plans for more developments in the years ahead.
