External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar emphasized the increasing significance of Indian skills and talent on a global scale, noting that developed countries are now showing interest in forming mobility agreements with India. Speaking at the CII Annual Business Summit 2024 in New Delhi, Jaishankar highlighted the shift in the global knowledge economy and the rising demand for skilled professionals. He pointed out that technological advancements and demographic shortages in developed nations are driving this trend, prompting an international interest in facilitating the movement of talent from India.
Jaishankar stressed that India aims to ensure its talent is treated fairly and transparently in the global workplace, which is rapidly expanding. He underscored the urgency of enhancing the scale and quality of domestic skilling initiatives, aligning with the Modi government’s vision. He also called on businesses to contribute to upgrading the country’s human resources, supported by the growing culture of innovation and start-ups.
Highlighting India’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad, Jaishankar mentioned successful evacuation operations from Ukraine and Sudan as examples of India’s capabilities. He stated that as the global workforce grows, India’s responsibility to protect its nationals overseas will also increase. India is leveraging technology to improve the living conditions of its citizens working and traveling abroad. Furthermore, he reiterated the goal of making India a global hub for innovation, research, and design, complementing the ‘Make in India’ initiative with a ‘Work in India’ and ‘Work for the World’ approach.
Addressing global crises, Jaishankar discussed the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, noting the resulting “3F crisis” of fuel, food, and fertilizers. He described the world’s current state as a “perfect storm,” with terrorism and extremism affecting those who once perpetuated it. Jaishankar emphasized India’s role in mitigating these impacts and contributing to global stability through a balanced approach of ‘Bharat First’ and ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam,’ portraying India as a global friend, or ‘Vishwa Bandhu.’
