Speaking at a lecture titled “Global Uncertainties and Resurgent Bharat” organised by the Vishwamanthan Research Foundation, Prafulla Ketkar, editor of Organiser Weekly, highlighted India’s growing role as a source of solutions during global crises. Ketkar emphasised that the world is looking toward India with renewed hope, primarily due to its unique concept of “spiritual democracy.” According to him, this concept grants people the freedom to believe in what they feel is true, which in turn fosters an environment where innovative and compassionate solutions can emerge.
Ketkar pointed out that this kind of freedom in India allows for a diversity of thoughts and ideas, positioning the country as a leader on the global stage. He reflected on historical moments, such as the dissolution of the USSR, when even global leaders sought India’s counsel. Ketkar mentioned how Margaret Thatcher, then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, advised Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to look toward India for solutions during the Soviet Union’s crisis.
In his lecture, Ketkar also touched upon the ongoing global conflicts, including the Israel-Hamas war, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the United States’ prolonged fight against terrorism. He argued that the world is eager for India’s perspective and solutions in these turbulent times. Despite facing multiple challenges throughout its history, India has managed to preserve its distinct identity and maintain its position in the world. Ketkar believes this resilience and the nation’s adherence to its cultural values make it uniquely capable of offering guidance in times of global uncertainty.
He also stressed the importance of understanding India’s past, particularly its advanced societal achievements long before many other regions of the world, including Europe. According to Ketkar, recognizing this historical depth and cultural richness is essential for appreciating India’s potential as a problem-solver in the current global context.
Ketkar concluded by reaffirming that India’s spiritual democracy—where individuals are free to follow their beliefs without coercion—continues to be a beacon for the world. The principles of freedom, diversity, and tolerance, which are deeply rooted in Indian society, are what make the country a go-to source for solutions amid various global crises.
