German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday conveyed Germany’s readiness to take its relationship with India to a new strategic height, emphasizing that both countries share common interests at a time when global politics and economics are undergoing significant transformation. Speaking alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi after bilateral discussions in Ahmedabad, Merz highlighted the importance of closer cooperation between the two democracies.
During his remarks, Merz referred to his visit to Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace as deeply symbolic, stating that Gandhi’s message of becoming the change one wishes to see resonates strongly in today’s uncertain global environment. He expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Modi’s invitation to Gujarat, describing it as a gesture reflecting the depth of trust and friendship between the two nations. According to Merz, the visit underscored not only historical ties but also the forward-looking nature of India–Germany relations.
The German leader described Ahmedabad and the wider Gujarat region as a powerful representation of modern India’s growth story. He noted that the state reflects a blend of historical legacy and economic momentum, ranging from traditional textile industries to advanced industrial parks and a vibrant startup ecosystem. Merz emphasized that such economic dynamism aligns well with Germany’s technological strengths, creating a strong foundation for deeper engagement.
Merz pointed out that both countries are aligned in supporting free trade and open markets, especially as protectionist tendencies re-emerge globally. He stressed that India and Germany oppose the use of supply chains and raw materials as tools of geopolitical pressure. By reducing unilateral dependencies, both economies can strengthen resilience and long-term stability. He also described India as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific, citing its position as the fastest-growing economy among major global players.
Highlighting shared democratic values, Merz referred to India as Germany’s preferred strategic partner. He noted that while Europe and transatlantic ties remain important, expanding partnerships beyond traditional alliances has become essential. According to him, the combination of India’s scale and democratic framework with Germany’s technological expertise creates favorable conditions for a renewed partnership.
Merz also addressed global security challenges, describing the evolving world order as increasingly shaped by power politics. He referred to Russia’s military action in Ukraine as a clear sign of this shift and emphasized the need for like-minded nations to work together. He expressed Germany’s intent to expand cooperation with India in defence, including joint exercises, industrial collaboration, and innovation-driven production.
Concluding his remarks, Merz stated that strengthening defence and economic ties with India holds strategic importance for both countries, contributing to supply chain diversification and reinforcing shared global responsibilities.
