Ashwin Ramaswami, a candidate for the Georgia State Senate in District 48, has spoken out against the recent racist attacks targeting South Asian individuals in the US, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Usha Vance. He expressed deep concern over the racist incidents involving Hindu American Usha Vance and Sikh American Harmeet Dhillon at the GOP Convention, as well as the derogatory comments made by Republicans towards Vice President Harris based on her race.
Ramaswami emphasized the importance of respecting diverse perspectives and differences, a value rooted in his Dharmic traditions as a practicing Hindu American. He pledged to promote this attitude within his district and across the nation. His condemnation aligns with Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s denouncement of the racist backlash against Harmeet Dhillon’s recital of the Sikh prayer ‘ardas’ at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Born to immigrant parents in Johns Creek, Ramaswami has a strong commitment to public service and activism. If elected, he would become Georgia’s first Generation Z senator and the only legislator with a background in computer technology.
In the upcoming race, incumbent Shawn Still is facing indictment. For Georgia Democrats, District 48 presents the best opportunity for a Senate seat pickup, being the state’s most competitive district. The district had a close split in the 2020 election, favoring Trump over Biden by a margin of 48-52, and in 2022, Warnock won by a narrow 51-49 margin.
Ramaswami’s campaign has received endorsements from Congresswoman Lucy McBath and Senator Jon Ossoff, who represent Georgia’s 7th congressional district. Additionally, Ramaswami is one of four Georgians on the DNC credentials committee for 2024.
