The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has undertaken extensive measures to guarantee safe and hygienic food for the millions attending Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. Partnering with Uttar Pradesh’s Food Safety and Drug Administration, FSSAI has deployed 10 Mobile Food Testing Labs (Food Safety on Wheels) and stationed food analysts across the event. These mobile labs perform on-the-spot tests for food adulteration and spoilage while educating food vendors and visitors about proper food safety practices.
The event is divided into five zones and 25 sectors, with 56 Food Safety Officers (FSOs) monitoring hygiene and food quality. Each sector is overseen by two FSOs, while Chief Food Safety Officers (CFSOs) manage the zones, coordinating efforts from a central office at Sankat Mochan Marg in Sector 24.
Regular inspections are conducted at hotels, dhabas, and food stalls to maintain high food standards. Teams are also addressing complaints, checking cooking methods, and testing raw materials like rice, sugar, and wheat flour at the Regional Public Health Laboratory in Varanasi.
To raise public awareness, FSSAI has organized interactive activities, including street plays (nukkad nataks), food safety quizzes, and educational sessions on food adulteration and licensing. These initiatives aim to educate vendors and devotees on the importance of safe and hygienic food, ensuring a safer experience for all attendees at Maha Kumbh 2025.
