The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a health advisory concerning spices from an Indian brand, which tested positive for Salmonella on June 30, 2023. Consumers who purchased these products in certain U.S. states, including Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, are being cautioned.
The flagged products include Everest Garam Masala, Everest Sambhar Masala, and Maggi Masala ae Magic. These items were bought at retail stores in India, imported, and then distributed in the U.S. since March 16, 2023. They are currently being recalled.
Notably, the products were not distributed by Everest Food Products Private Limited based in Gujarat, and they were not intended for the U.S. market. The company assured that no illnesses related to these products have been reported so far.
Salmonella, a bacteria known to cause sickness, can be found in various foods, including chicken, beef, pork, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and processed foods. Detecting Salmonella contamination can be difficult since affected items often taste normal. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that Salmonella causes over 1 million foodborne illnesses in the U.S. annually.
