European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a dialogue following the conclusion of the Indian elections. During their conversation, they reiterated their commitment to bolstering bilateral ties, with a particular focus on advancing discussions regarding the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Ursula von der Leyen shared her thoughts, stating, “It was a pleasure to speak with Narendra Modi after the Indian elections. We agreed to sustain talks on enhancing our bilateral ties, notably the FTA. We also anticipate the upcoming @G7 summit, where we’ll address our collaborative efforts on global matters.”
The upcoming G7 summit is scheduled to take place from June 13 to 15 in Italy.
Having secured victory for a third consecutive term, Prime Minister Modi has received congratulations and well-wishes from global leaders. Earlier, he expressed gratitude to Ursula von der Leyen for congratulating him on his electoral triumph in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, extending his best wishes for the EU elections.

In response, the EU Commission President congratulated both the people of India and PM Modi on their success in the Lok Sabha elections. She conveyed her congratulations to the people of India and Narendra Modi. As the EU approaches its own elections, she celebrated the democratic voice in the two largest democracies worldwide. She eagerly anticipated a continued and fruitful partnership between the EU and India.
Sources indicate that over 75 world leaders have extended congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Leaders from Asia, Europe, Africa, West Asia, and the Caribbean extended congratulations to PM Modi for his electoral victory. Among them are UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US President Joe Biden, European Council President Charles Michel, Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Singapore PM Lawrence Wong, Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were declared by the Election Commission of India, revealing that the BJP secured victory in 240 seats, while the Congress won 99 seats out of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. Despite the BJP’s dominance, it fell short of the majority mark by 32 seats, marking the first time since 2014 that it did not secure a majority on its own.
