Producer Ektaa Kapoor, who has been receiving widespread acclaim for her latest theatrical release, The Sabarmati Report, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for declaring the Vikrant Massey-starrer tax-free in the state.
On Thursday, the Chief Minister took to his official X account to announce the decision. He wrote, “People’s government has decided to make the film Sabarmati Report, based on a true incident, tax-free in Odisha. The film shows how Karsevaks were burnt alive in the Godhra fire incident to fulfill their vested interests and create unrest. This film will bring to the people such a hair-raising, heart-wrenching truth of the past and make the general public more aware. #TheSabarmatiReport”
Responding to the CM’s post, Ektaa Kapoor expressed her appreciation, stating, “Heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Ji and Government of Odisha for making #TheSabarmatiReport tax-free in the state. This support will help bring the truth of a significant chapter in our history to more people.”
The film, The Sabarmati Report, is based on the tragic burning of the Sabarmati Express train on February 27, 2002. In this incident, the S6 coach of the train was set on fire near Godhra railway station in Gujarat, resulting in the deaths of numerous passengers. The movie explores this event through the perspective of a Hindi journalist, portrayed by Vikrant Massey, who strives to uncover and report the truth amidst systemic challenges.
Previously, the film had also been granted tax-free status in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana, states closely tied to the film’s narrative. While the movie claims to present uncovered truths and factual details, it has been met with widespread positive responses from audiences and critics alike. It has further garnered support from several political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Ektaa Kapoor’s movie continues to spark discussions on historical events, making its way as one of the notable films this year.
