External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar warmly welcomed Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren to the India-Chile Joint Commission meeting, highlighting the significance of their discussions. Jaishankar noted that the two countries have a wealth of topics to cover and expressed appreciation for Chile’s engagement in the Voice of Global South Summits. He also praised Chilean President Gabriel Boric for his valuable insights shared at the third summit held on August 17.
Reflecting on past interactions, Jaishankar recalled that their previous meeting was conducted virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s a pleasure to host you and your team in person for this second Joint Commission meeting,” Jaishankar said. He emphasized the importance of Chile’s participation in the summit and thanked Chile for its support of India’s bid for a permanent seat on an expanded Security Council. Jaishankar also acknowledged Chile’s involvement in the upcoming Trade and Economic Ministers meeting in November 2023.
Alberto van Klaveren arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday for the official visit, with Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal extending a warm reception. Jaiswal noted on X that the visit is an excellent opportunity to advance bilateral cooperation.
Following the Joint Commission meeting and the Chile-India Business (Agriculture) Summit, Klaveren is set to travel to Mumbai. The MEA highlighted Chile as a crucial partner in the Latin American region and emphasized that the visit would serve to assess progress in bilateral relations and explore new cooperative opportunities.
