The University of Pennsylvania has appointed Dr. Sindhu Srinivas as the Executive Director of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s (HUP)-Cedar Avenue public health campus. A professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Perelman School of Medicine and a senior fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, Dr. Srinivas brings extensive experience in quality improvement, maternal health, and health equity to her new leadership role.
Previously serving as HUP’s Associate Chief Medical Officer for Quality and Safety, Dr. Srinivas was also Vice Chair for Quality and Safety in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In her new role, she will oversee all HUP-based services at the Cedar Avenue campus, working alongside public health partners to improve healthcare access for underserved communities in West Philadelphia.
Dr. Srinivas is a nationally recognized maternal-fetal medicine specialist, known for her research on health equity and innovative care models. She has contributed to both the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Maternal Mortality Review Committees and currently serves as President-elect of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM). She earned her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed her residency and fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Expressing her commitment to her new role, Dr. Srinivas stated, “HUP-Cedar Avenue plays a vital role in improving community health. I am honored to lead this campus and work in partnership with the Philadelphia Public Health Management Corporation, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the community to advance our mission.”
HUP-Cedar Avenue was established in 2021 when Penn Medicine and the Philadelphia Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) took over the former Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic’s Mercy Catholic Medical Center. PHMC owns the property, while Penn Medicine manages hospital operations. The initiative has received support from key partners, including the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, to provide essential healthcare services to West Philadelphia residents.
Dr. Srinivas gained national recognition alongside Dr. Adi Hirshberg for their Heart Safe Motherhood program, which addressed racial disparities in postpartum blood pressure monitoring. Their work earned them the 2024 American Heart Association’s Edward S. Cooper Award.
HUP-Cedar Avenue offers a wide range of services, including primary and behavioral health care, emergency and acute care, substance use treatment, and patient-centered programs aimed at addressing the social and economic factors that influence health outcomes. Under Dr. Srinivas’ leadership, the campus is expected to further strengthen its commitment to health equity and innovative community care.
