The International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO) has announced Dr. Shubha Tole as its first President-elect from the developing world. Dr. Tole, currently serving as the Dean of Graduate Studies at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, India, will begin her term on January 1, 2025. The announcement was made during IBRO’s annual assembly, held in Chicago, USA, on October 6, 2024.
Dr. Tole expressed her excitement about the opportunity to lead IBRO and emphasized her commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the global neuroscience community. “I am honored to serve a global network like IBRO, which connects neuroscientists worldwide, including those from underserved regions,” she said. As the first President-elect from the developing world, Dr. Tole aims to strengthen IBRO’s reach and support for aspiring neuroscientists with limited access to resources.
In addition to her new role, Dr. Tole has held several significant positions in the neuroscience field, including leadership roles within the IBRO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee and the Society for Neuroscience (SfN). She is also the current President of the International Society for Developmental Neuroscience (ISDN) and has chaired the Women in Science Committee of the Indian Academy of Sciences. Her work with the ALBA network further showcases her advocacy for diversity in the field.
Based in Paris, IBRO is a global alliance of neuroscience organizations dedicated to advancing neuroscience through education, research, and advocacy. It represents 69 scientific societies from 57 countries, providing a platform for neuroscientists to collaborate and grow worldwide.
Dr. Tole earned her PhD from CalTech and returned to India in 1999 to establish her own neuroscience research programs.
