Dr. Ravi Kalhan, Louis A. Simpson Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and a key figure in Pulmonary and Critical Care, has been appointed associate dean for Faculty Affairs at Feinberg School of Medicine.
In his new role, Dr. Kalhan will be instrumental in advancing faculty recruitment, retention, promotion, and career development initiatives at Feinberg, according to a recent Northwestern press release. He will also act as a key resource for departments and faculty, offering guidance on academic and professional matters. Additionally, he will support programs aimed at developing faculty members’ clinical, teaching, and leadership skills.
Reflecting on his new responsibilities, Dr. Kalhan shared, “Having dedicated my entire career to Feinberg, I’ve been fortunate to thrive in an environment that fosters faculty growth. I’m thrilled to collaborate with Dr. Sorond and the Faculty Affairs team in building a community that empowers our faculty to excel in clinical innovation, medical education, and scientific discovery.”
In addition to his new role, Dr. Kalhan is a professor of Preventive Medicine within the Division of Epidemiology and co-directs the Center for Education and Career Development at Northwestern’s NUCATS Institute. He is the principal investigator of a groundbreaking nationwide study that tracks and analyzes lung health in millennials, supported by a significant $26 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Dr. Kalhan’s research is deeply rooted in respiratory epidemiology, with a focus on large-scale cohort studies examining the progression from respiratory health to chronic lung disease. His clinical expertise includes providing comprehensive care to patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at all stages of the condition.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Kalhan is the son of two accomplished medical professionals. His father, Satish C. Kalhan, is a physician-scientist who dedicated his career to Case Western Reserve University, while his mother, Santosh B. Kalhan, worked as a pediatric anesthesiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Kalhan earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, followed by a Master of Science degree from Feinberg. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and pursued a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. He is married to Dr. Susan Tsai, a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon affiliated with Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
