Dr. Nandita Shah, a physician and the founder of SHARAN India (Sanctuary for Health and Reconnection to Animals and Nature), recently conducted a day-long seminar highlighting how whole food plant-based (WFPB) nutrition can help prevent and even reverse chronic illnesses. The event drew a large, engaged audience eager to learn how dietary choices can impact conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and obesity.
The seminar opened with a live green smoothie demonstration, offering participants a practical, dairy-free, and nutrient-dense breakfast alternative. Dr. Shah underscored the nutritional superiority of whole, unprocessed foods over heavily processed products that are stripped of fiber and loaded with harmful additives.
Highlighting the connection between diet and inflammation, she explained how acidic foods—including meat, coffee, and processed snacks—can disrupt the body’s pH balance, while alkaline-rich plant foods help detoxify and reduce inflammation.
A registered medical practitioner and homeopath, Dr. Shah addressed widespread misconceptions about diabetes, emphasizing that fat—not sugar—is a primary contributor to insulin resistance. She noted that a low-fat, fiber-rich WFPB diet can restore insulin sensitivity and reduce dependence on medication.
One of the highlights of the day was a testimonial by Rakesh Bhargava, a long-time vegan who shared his journey of recovering from two heart attacks solely through dietary changes, without surgical intervention or long-term medication.
Attendees were treated to a variety of plant-based meals throughout the day, offering a glimpse into the diversity and flavor of WFPB cuisine. Interactive sessions covered topics such as intermittent fasting, hydration, and the health impact of rice consumption. Participants also received actionable guidance on transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, making healthier breakfasts, and crafting their own green smoothies.
The event was sponsored by wellness advocates Suman and Shashi Khanna and supported by Plant Powered Metro New York and World Vegan Vision, both committed to spreading awareness about the health benefits of plant-based nutrition.
