Dr. Nandika D’Souza has been appointed as associate dean of strategic initiatives at The University of Texas at Dallas in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. While engineering was an unconventional field for girls during her youth, her mother encouraged her to pursue it as a path to financial stability after the death of her father. D’Souza’s passion for engineering was sparked during her studies, especially in a statics class where the design of structures captured her imagination.
In her new role at UT Dallas, Dr. D’Souza aims to dismantle barriers and create opportunities for students from all backgrounds to engage with engineering education. Her work will focus on building flexible pathways for community college students and working professionals, ensuring inclusivity within the Jonsson School, and advancing the school’s national recognition. As a professor of mechanical engineering, she will continue her research into polymers and sustainable materials, including work on high-performance products and semiconductor packaging.
Dr. D’Souza’s career spans 28 years at the University of North Texas, where she held leadership roles and was recognized for her contributions to mechanical engineering and materials science. She is a fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Her personal journey in engineering is one she is eager to share and extend to others, inspired by her late mother, who proudly supported her career. D’Souza has also established a service award in her mother’s name, reflecting her commitment to excellence and positivity.
Dr. D’Souza holds degrees from the University of Poona, Auburn University, and Texas A&M University.
