Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, disclosed that India presently possesses 23 nuclear power reactors, generating an installed nuclear power capacity of 7,480 megawatts (MW). In the fiscal year 2022-23, these reactors produced 46,982 million units (MU) of electricity, considering infirm generation as well. This information was provided in response to a written query in the Rajya Sabha.
The share of nuclear power in India’s overall electricity generation for the same year was 2.8%, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh.
Looking ahead to the future, by 2031, the installed nuclear power capacity is projected to rise from 7,480 MW to 22,480 MW, primarily due to the progressive completion of ongoing projects and sanctioned initiatives. Additionally, the government has granted “in principle” approval to establish new sites for further nuclear reactor construction.
