The country has an abundant supply of coal, and most of its coal requirements are met through domestic production. Coal production across India increased significantly by approximately 14.7% from 778.21 million tonnes (MT) in 2021-22 to 893.19 MT in 2022-23. In comparison to the figures from 2013-14, coal production in 2022-23 has seen a remarkable 58% increase.
Specifically, during January-June 2023, domestic coal production experienced a notable surge of more than 8.51% compared to the same period the previous year.
The total demand for coal, which includes both domestic production and imports, amounted to 1,115.02 MT in 2022-23 and 1,027.83 MT in 2021-22.
To promote environmentally friendly mining practices, coal companies have implemented modern technologies to minimize pollution’s impact. They have also undertaken initiatives like extensive tree plantation programs and eco-parks to preserve biodiversity. Additionally, maximizing the utilization of mine water, introducing first-mile connectivity projects, and setting up sand segregation plants are among the steps taken towards sustainable mining.
