The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Southern California recently hosted Sangam, a large interfaith and multicultural Diwali celebration designed to strengthen unity and cultural understanding across diverse communities. The gathering brought together an impressive mix of diplomats, scholars, religious leaders, and community organizations from across the region, reflecting Diwali’s expanding global resonance.
At the heart of Sangam was a shared appreciation of Diwali’s timeless message—the triumph of light over darkness and harmony over division. These values shaped the tone of the evening and were echoed by various leaders throughout the event.
The celebration drew strong diplomatic participation. Dr. K. J. Srinivasa, the first Consul General of India in Los Angeles, opened the program by highlighting the importance of such inclusive gatherings in nurturing meaningful relationships between cultures. Delegations from the Consulates of Armenia, El Salvador, Switzerland, Cambodia, South Africa, Lithuania, the Dominican Republic, and Myanmar took part, along with members of the LA28 Cultural Olympiad Committee, underscoring the event’s international reach.
A significant portion of the evening honored local Indigenous communities. Members of the Gabrieleno/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians offered a land acknowledgment and prayer, grounding the celebration in respect for the region’s original custodians. California Governor Gavin Newsom also sent a message extending Diwali greetings and commending the Mandir for serving as a beacon of unity and cultural exchange.
Guests were welcomed in the Mandir’s Haveli with traditional warmth before embarking on a guided tour showcasing the temple’s detailed craftsmanship and spiritual symbolism. As night fell, the main outdoor program unfolded against the stunning backdrop of the illuminated Mandir, creating a serene setting for reflection and celebration.
The formal ceremony featured interfaith expressions from leaders representing Sikh, Jain, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, and Indigenous traditions. Their reflections emphasized shared values, peaceful coexistence, and the importance of spiritual dialogue. Attendees were served an authentic vegetarian thali, offering a taste of India’s culinary heritage.
The event concluded with a powerful video message from Paramtattvadas Swami of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in London, who encouraged continued collaboration among faith communities. With Los Angeles preparing for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, he emphasized that collective goodwill can light the world “far beyond our own walls.”
