On October 17, 2024, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Los Angeles, California, hosted its inaugural “Diwali for Diplomats” event, aimed at promoting international relations while celebrating the festival of Diwali. This remarkable evening attracted representatives from over 15 diplomatic missions, including Consuls General and staff from various countries. The initiative was inspired by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj’s vision of enhancing global harmony, embodied in the saying, “In the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.”
The festivities kicked off with a Welcome Reception at the Haveli, where diplomats were warmly greeted by volunteers adorned with garlands, accompanied by traditional Indian music and refreshments. San Bernardino County Supervisor Curt Hagman addressed the guests, welcoming them to Chino Hills and San Bernardino County. Following the reception, attendees participated in a guided tour of the Mandir, where they gained insights into Hindu architecture and the Mandir’s significance and history.
Among the diplomatic missions in attendance were representatives from countries such as the United States, St. Vincent & Grenadines, Peru, Hungary, Switzerland, and India, among others. Numerous guests shared their thoughts on their experiences, including Mr. Ezra Chiloba, the Consul General of Kenya in Los Angeles, who conveyed his admiration for the community’s commitment and the beauty of the Mandir.
After the tour, guests enjoyed a Diwali Gala set against a stunning backdrop of Burmese teakwood, elegantly decorated in the festive spirit. The evening included keynote speeches from guest speakers and a traditional vegetarian meal presented on steel thalis.
Following Diwali traditions, a diya lighting ceremony was held, led by Mr. Matt Kawecki from the United States Department of State and Mr. Rakesh Adlakha, the Deputy Consul General of India in San Francisco. In his opening remarks, Mr. Kawecki highlighted the importance of events like this in fostering mutual understanding among diplomats, emphasizing the strength that diversity brings to the United States.
The highlight of the evening was a keynote address by Pujya Brahmaviharidas Swami, Head Swami at the BAPS Mandir in Abu Dhabi. He conveyed a message of peace and unity, welcoming guests to the heart of the Mandir and recognizing the diplomats’ dedication to creating harmony worldwide.
The program concluded with remarks from Mr. Adlakha, who underscored the significance of such events in enhancing cultural understanding and unity. With major events like the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and the Olympics in 2028 on the horizon, the evening ended with a hopeful message about the importance of global harmony. Guests departed feeling inspired and committed to promoting respect and unity among nations.
