In a meeting with his Maldivian counterpart, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated India’s dedication to enhancing its relationship with the Maldives. Reflecting on President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024, Singh noted that the visit and the subsequent Joint Vision Document had redefined the bilateral relationship, providing a new direction for cooperation.
Singh highlighted the enduring cultural, historical, and ethnic bonds between the two nations, calling their ties “close, cordial, and multidimensional.” He emphasized the special status of the Maldives under India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, which aims to foster regional stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.
Both nations play critical roles in ensuring the safety of the Indian Ocean, Singh pointed out, contributing to the vision of “Security And Growth For All” (SAGAR) in the region. The defense cooperation between India and the Maldives was also a key focus, with Singh outlining the range of initiatives aimed at building the Maldives’ defense capabilities. These include training programs, joint exercises, workshops, and the provision of defense equipment.
India, as a longstanding partner, remains committed to supporting the Maldives National Defence Force in its capacity-building efforts through projects, training, and resources. Singh reaffirmed India’s ongoing assistance in the development and welfare of the Maldivian people.
The India-Maldives relationship has deep roots in cultural, religious, and economic ties. India was one of the first countries to recognize the Maldives post-independence in 1965. The geographical proximity of the Maldives to India, along with its strategic location along critical maritime routes, adds to its importance in India’s foreign policy.
Tourism is a vital pillar of the Maldivian economy, contributing directly to nearly 25% of the GDP and supporting about 70% of employment when accounting for indirect contributions. Strengthening bilateral ties with India is seen as key to further boosting the economic and strategic significance of both nations.
