Vice President-elect CP Radhakrishnan is set to be formally sworn into office on September 12, 2025, in a ceremony to be conducted by President Droupadi Murmu. The swearing-in will mark the official start of his tenure as India’s 15th Vice President.
Radhakrishnan earned a decisive victory in the recent election, securing 452 votes out of a total of 767, defeating opposition candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy. His election reflects the support of the ruling alliance and underscores his prominence in Indian political circles.
Following the formal oath-taking, Radhakrishnan will assume his constitutional responsibilities, including serving as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha during the upcoming winter parliamentary session. In this role, he will oversee proceedings in India’s upper house, guiding legislative discussions and ensuring smooth parliamentary functioning.
Prior to taking office, Radhakrishnan is expected to resign from his current position as the Governor of Maharashtra, a step necessary to avoid conflicts of interest and formally transition to his new responsibilities. His experience as governor, combined with his extensive political and administrative background, is anticipated to contribute to effective leadership in the Vice President’s office.
Observers note that Radhakrishnan’s victory reinforces the NDA’s parliamentary majority and demonstrates confidence in his ability to manage the Rajya Sabha’s legislative agenda. As a seasoned leader with decades of political experience, he brings a blend of administrative acumen and legislative knowledge to the position.
The upcoming swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a formal and dignified affair, reflecting the significance of the Vice President’s constitutional role in India. With the oath of office, Radhakrishnan officially joins the ranks of the nation’s senior-most leaders, ready to contribute to the legislative process and uphold democratic traditions in his new capacity.
