Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to take the oath as the new Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on June 9, according to sources. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to be present at the event.
The TDP-led alliance is heading for a sweeping victory, securing a significant lead in 158 out of 175 assembly constituencies, paving the way for Mr. Naidu to govern Andhra Pradesh once more.
At 74, Mr. Naidu will assume the role of Chief Minister for the fourth time, having previously served as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh from 1995 to 2004. He also became the first Chief Minister of the residual state of Andhra Pradesh after its bifurcation in 2014.
After a significant defeat to the YSR Congress Party in 2019, Mr. Naidu has made a comeback, leveraging an anti-establishment sentiment. His alliance with the Jana Sena Party (JSP), led by actor-politician Pawan Kalyan, and the BJP appears to have been crucial in this turnaround.
The TDP has secured a substantial majority with a clear lead in 131 segments. Mr. Naidu is leading in the Kuppam constituency, which he has represented since 1989.
Additionally, Mr. Naidu’s son and TDP general secretary, Nara Lokesh, is leading in the Mangalagiri constituency, where he had previously faced defeat.
The TDP is also leading in 16 out of the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies, with the tripartite alliance ahead in 21 seats. In 2019, the TDP managed to win only 23 assembly seats and three Lok Sabha seats.
