The University of Massachusetts Amherst has announced that Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy is stepping down after serving in this capacity for eleven years. During his tenure, the university achieved remarkable accomplishments in various areas, including diversity, graduation rates, and impactful research, as stated by the University.
Under Subbaswamy’s leadership, the university’s national ranking in the U.S. News & World Report Colleges Guide significantly improved, climbing from No. 52 to No. 26 among 209 public universities in the country. UMass President Marty Meehan praised Subbaswamy’s skillful guidance, which led to the university’s growth in impact and reputation, while maintaining a strong focus on student success.
Reflecting on his time at the university, Subbaswamy expressed gratitude for the support and friendship he received from faculty, staff, students, and alumni during the past decade. He considered it a privilege to serve as the university’s chancellor and emphasized the collaborative spirit that contributed to the institution becoming one of the rapidly rising top-tier public research universities in the nation. Subbaswamy expressed confidence that the University of Massachusetts Amherst will continue to achieve even greater heights in its next chapter.
Before his tenure at UMass, Subbaswamy held significant positions at other renowned institutions, including serving as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami and Indiana University, as well as University Provost at the University of Kentucky in 2006.
