Shortly after India faced a major disappointment at the Paris Olympics due to Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50 kg women’s wrestling final, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to console the athlete. In a heartfelt post on X, the Prime Minister praised Vinesh, calling her a “champion among champions.”

He expressed his deep sorrow over the setback, emphasizing that words could not capture his sense of despair. Despite this, he affirmed his belief in Vinesh’s resilience and her ability to confront challenges head-on. He encouraged her to come back stronger, assuring her that the entire nation is rooting for her.
Sources revealed that the Prime Minister also engaged with Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, seeking detailed information on the incident and discussing potential courses of action to support Vinesh. He urged PT Usha to explore all options to assist Vinesh and to file a strong protest regarding her disqualification if it would help her case.
Earlier today, the Indian Olympic contingent confirmed Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event. Scheduled to compete against the USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match, Vinesh was disqualified for weighing slightly over the 50 kg limit. The Indian contingent issued a statement expressing regret over the disqualification and requesting respect for Vinesh’s privacy, as the team focuses on the ongoing competitions.
Despite this setback, India still has hopes in the athletics arena. Avinash Sable will compete in the 3000 Metre Steeplechase final on Thursday morning, IST. Sable earned his spot in the final by finishing fifth in the heats at the Stade de France, clocking 8:15.43s behind competitors from Morocco, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Japan.
Additionally, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu is set to compete in the Women’s 49 kg category tonight. Wrestler Antim Panghal will also be in action in the Women’s Freestyle 53 kg category Round of 16 bout on Wednesday. So far, India has secured three medals at the Paris Olympics, all from the shooting events.
