In a notable departure from convention, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has opted to throw its support behind Adam Hollier, challenging first-term Indian American Representative Shri Thanedar in Michigan’s 13th congressional district.
Hollier’s candidacy has gained significant traction, particularly with endorsements from CBC chair Rep. Steven Horsford and former chair Rep. Joyce Beatty. Their backing underscores Hollier’s commitment to community service and addressing constituent needs, adding weight to his campaign, especially in a district where a significant portion of the population is black.
Despite Thanedar’s incumbency, Hollier’s momentum has been bolstered by additional endorsements from Michigan’s secretary of state, the state’s House Speaker, and other influential state legislators. Horsford lauded Hollier’s leadership qualities and dedication to advocating for constituents’ interests, emphasizing his commitment to defending freedoms, fighting for rights, and ensuring equitable opportunities for all community members.
While facing stiff competition from Hollier, Thanedar remains optimistic about his reelection chances. He boasts support from over 15 influential elected officials and organizations, including fellow Indian American congressional colleagues Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ami Bera, and Ro Khanna. Additionally, Thanedar highlights his substantial financial backing, with a cash-at-hand amount exceeding $5 million to fuel his reelection efforts.
However, despite Thanedar’s financial advantage, Hollier’s campaign has showcased its fundraising prowess, outraising Thanedar in donations for the second consecutive quarter. The endorsement from the CBC signals the significant challenge facing Thanedar in retaining his seat in the primary.
The Detroit News noted the uncommon occurrence of House Democrats endorsing a primary challenger against a sitting colleague, emphasizing the significance of the CBC’s support for Hollier. With endorsements from key figures within the CBC and other influential leaders, Hollier’s campaign gathers momentum as the primary election approaches.
