Just after India’s thrilling T20 World Cup win over South Africa in Barbados last Saturday, which secured the trophy for India for the second time, three players announced their retirement from T20I cricket within 24 hours. The first to do so was Virat Kohli, immediately after receiving the Player of the Match award. This was followed by India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, during the post-match press conference. Ravindra Jadeja joined them a few hours later. But does this mean Jasprit Bumrah might be next?
Bumrah played a significant role in India’s historic T20 World Cup victory, which was their first in 17 years. He took 15 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 8.26, making him the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. One of his best performances came in the final, where his economical bowling in the death overs played a key part in denying South Africa the win.
Kohli, Rohit, and Jadeja all announced their retirement from T20Is after the match. However, Bumrah has confirmed that he plans to continue playing.
When asked about his retirement during the felicitation at Wankhede Stadium, Bumrah replied that it is a long way off. He mentioned that he has just started and hopes retirement is still far away.
At an earlier event in Mumbai, Kohli praised Bumrah for his vital contribution, particularly during a tense moment in the final. Heinrich Klaasen had brought South Africa close to victory, with just 25 runs needed from the final 25 balls. Bumrah’s tight bowling, conceding only six runs in two overs, put South Africa in a difficult position, ultimately leading to their seven-run defeat.
Everyone in the stadium shared the feeling that the game might slip away again. However, the last five overs were exceptional. Jasprit Bumrah’s performance, bowling two of those overs, was outstanding. The former India captain expressed his gratitude, saying they are fortunate to have Bumrah on their team.
