The recent BRICS Parliamentary Forum held in Brasilia, Brazil delivered a powerful diplomatic statement by unanimously condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The condemnation came from a coalition of countries including India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, the UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia, marking a rare moment of global consensus on the threat of terrorism.
Led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, India’s delegation urged the international community to adopt a unified and coordinated approach to counter global challenges. In his address, he outlined four pivotal actions: disrupting financial flows to terror outfits, enhancing intelligence cooperation, preventing abuse of modern technology, and deepening judicial and investigative collaboration. These measures were unanimously adopted and formally incorporated into the forum’s joint declaration.
During the session themed “Towards Stronger and More Durable BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation,” Shri Birla stressed India’s unwavering commitment to the BRICS cause. He described BRICS as a voice of the Global South—a symbol of unity among culturally diverse nations. He also referenced the Indian ethos of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or “the world is one family,” highlighting how this principle aligns with BRICS’ vision of inclusive development and collective accountability.
Shri Birla urged all BRICS parliaments to play a stronger role in shaping a fair and inclusive world order. India’s stand at the forum received widespread support—even from countries like China and several Muslim-majority nations—delivering a significant diplomatic blow to Pakistan.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat officially stated that all member nations denounced the Pahalgam attack and committed to united efforts in combating terrorism. Alongside security concerns, the forum also addressed topics such as Artificial Intelligence, global trade dynamics, and international cooperation for peace.
Recognizing India’s leadership, the forum appointed Shri Birla as chair for the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, to be hosted in India next year. This places India at the forefront of future efforts to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation and tackle shared global challenges.
