In a significant diplomatic development, Brazil has expressed strong support for India’s counter-terrorism initiative, Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. This endorsement came during a visit by an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, including BJP MP Tejasvi Surya and former Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
The delegation engaged in high-level discussions with Brazilian officials, including the Acting Foreign Minister, the President of the Brazilian Parliament, and members of the India-Brazil Friendship Group. Brazilian leaders unequivocally condemned Pakistan’s cross-border terrorism and affirmed Brazil’s stance as an “all-weather ally and friend” of India. This support is particularly significant given Brazil’s influential position in Latin America and its strategic partnerships with India in global forums such as the G-20, BRICS, and the International Solar Alliance.
Tejasvi Surya highlighted the importance of Brazil’s backing, noting that it reinforces India’s global narrative against terrorism. The delegation’s visit is part of a broader diplomatic outreach following the Pahalgam attack, aiming to consolidate international support for India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. Prior to Brazil, the delegation visited Panama, Guyana, and Colombia, receiving positive responses in each country.
Former Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu emphasized the shared understanding between India and Brazil on the dangers of terrorism as a policy instrument. He noted that Brazilian officials, including the Chief Advisor to the President, recognized the global threat posed by terrorism and appreciated India’s efforts in combating it.
The delegation also met with Senator Nelsinho Trad, President of the India-Brazil Friendship Front, who expressed strong support for India’s perspective on recent events. Shashi Tharoor acknowledged Trad’s endorsement, stating that such solidarity strengthens the bonds between the two democracies.
This diplomatic engagement underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and Brazil, particularly in the realm of counter-terrorism. The Indian delegation’s efforts to garner international support reflect a concerted move to build a united front against terrorism, with Brazil’s backing serving as a significant milestone in this endeavor.
