Prime Minister Narendra Modi observed Makar Sankranti at his Lok Kalyan Marg residence in New Delhi by feeding fodder to his cows, continuing a tradition closely associated with the harvest festival. A short video clip showed the Prime Minister standing on the lawn and gently offering feed to the cows, which were dressed in decorative cloths in line with festive customs. On the occasion, the Prime Minister extended warm wishes to people across the country, highlighting the cultural diversity with which Sankranti is celebrated in different regions. The festival marks the Sun’s transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn, or Makar, and is widely observed as a mid-winter harvest celebration across India. In a message shared on X, Modi said Sankranti is celebrated nationwide according to local traditions and prayed to Lord Surya for happiness, prosperity, and good health for all citizens. His message underlined the spiritual and agricultural significance of the festival, which is deeply connected to farming communities. Later in the day, Modi also took part in Pongal celebrations in the national capital at the residence of Union Minister L Murugan. The event was attended by prominent members of Tamil society, including cultural figures and artists. His presence was viewed as an effort to strengthen cultural ties and outreach, especially with assembly elections approaching in Tamil Nadu. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister described Pongal as a festival that honors the hard work of farmers and expresses gratitude to the land and the Sun. He said the celebration promotes harmony with nature and has grown into a global festival cherished by Tamilians around the world. Modi emphasized that Pongal conveys a deeper message of gratitude that should extend beyond words and become part of everyday life. He noted that when the Earth provides abundantly, it is humanity’s responsibility to value and protect it, reinforcing the festival’s relevance in today’s world.
