Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has reportedly donated around $50 million to Future Forward, a non-profit organization that is the primary external fundraising group supporting U.S. Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. The donation was intended to remain confidential, as Gates has not publicly endorsed Harris. According to The New York Times, this donation signifies a notable shift in Gates’s previous approach to political contributions.
In private discussions with friends this year, Gates has voiced worries about the implications of a second Trump presidency, although he has emphasized that he intends to work with whichever candidate is elected.
The report indicates that Gates, who does not have a close relationship with Harris, has praised the Biden administration’s efforts regarding climate change. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which he co-founded, is reportedly “deeply concerned” about potential reductions in family planning and global health programs if Trump were to win a second term, as shared by two individuals familiar with the foundation.
Gates is believed to have informed several people, including former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a significant supporter of Future Forward, about his donation. However, because the donation was funneled specifically to Future Forward USA Action, its non-profit arm, it will not be publicly disclosed, as this organization is classified as a ‘dark money’ entity that does not reveal its donors.
In response to the report, Gates did not directly confirm the donation but reiterated his commitment to bipartisanship, stating that “this election is different.” He expressed support for candidates committed to enhancing healthcare, alleviating poverty, and addressing climate change both in the U.S. and globally. Gates highlighted his extensive history of collaboration with leaders across the political spectrum while noting the unprecedented importance of the current U.S. election for Americans and vulnerable populations worldwide.
Melinda Gates, his ex-wife, had previously publicly endorsed Kamala Harris.
