US President Joe Biden has nominated an Indian-American judge, Sanket Jayshukh Bulsara, to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Bulsara, currently serving as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York since 2017, specializes in securities, contracts, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters. Born to immigrant parents from India and Kenya, Bulsara, aged 46, brings extensive legal experience to his new role.
The White House emphasized Bulsara’s qualifications, describing him as “extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and the Constitution.” Prior to his current role, Bulsara served as the Acting General Counsel of the US Securities and Exchange Commission from 2015. He has also worked at prestigious law firms such as Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP and Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP.
As a magistrate judge, Bulsara has presided over numerous settlement conferences, bench and jury trials, and authored numerous published opinions, according to the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York. He earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from Harvard Law School and his Bachelor of Arts (AB) from Harvard College with honors.
Senator Charles Schumer, the majority leader of the US Senate, praised Bulsara’s nomination, highlighting his expertise in legal matters and dedication to public service. Schumer recommended Bulsara to President Biden, emphasizing his representation of diverse clients in pro bono cases.
Bulsara’s upbringing reflects the American Dream, as the child of hard-working immigrants from India and Kenya. Born in the Bronx and raised in New Rochelle and Edgemont, New York, Bulsara’s parents immigrated over 50 years ago. His father was employed as an engineer by the City of New York, and his mother worked as a nurse. Bulsara currently resides in Long Island, New York, with his wife, Christine DeLorenzo.
