Vinod Khosla, a prominent Indian-American billionaire and venture capitalist, hosted an election fundraiser for US President Joe Biden at his Silicon Valley residence, where Biden raised over $1.5 million. The event, attended by many Indian-Americans from the Silicon Valley area, accommodated about 50 seated guests and around 30 standing. Tickets for the fundraiser ranged from $6,600 to $100,000. Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and founder of Khosla Ventures, introduced Biden at the event.
During his speech, Biden emphasized immigration and women’s rights, praising immigrants for their contributions to the country’s work ethic and economic growth. He acknowledged the Khosla family’s hospitality and humorously remarked about his preference for dogs over people.
Biden’s senior White House officials, including speechwriter Vinay Reddy, accompanied him to the fundraiser. En route to Khosla’s residence, the presidential convoy encountered both Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups.
Biden made several jokes about his Republican Party rival, Donald Trump, poking fun at his financial troubles and infamous statements. He also highlighted Trump’s pride in correspondence from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Ajay Bhutoria, a member of the Democratic National Committee’s National Finance Committee, noted the potential influence of Indian-Americans in battleground states, potentially shaping the outcome of the November 5, 2024, presidential race in favor of Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Federal Election Commission records show Khosla’s substantial contributions to Democratic campaigns and organizations, amounting to approximately $1.4 million. While Khosla has been active in political advocacy, particularly in technology, energy, and environmental issues, his political support may fluctuate over time.
The upcoming presidential election on November 5, 2024, is anticipated to feature a rematch between Biden and Trump, following their 2020 clash.
