Iconic pop star Beyoncé made a significant appearance at Kamala Harris’s rally on Friday at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium, where she voiced her support for the Democratic nominee just days before the critical election. Taking the stage alongside her Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé endorsed the Harris-Walz ticket, focusing her message on the need to protect personal freedoms and the importance of voting.
In her speech, Beyoncé emphasized the urgency of the upcoming election and framed her support from a personal perspective. “I’m not here as a celebrity or a politician but as a mother concerned about the world we’re shaping for our children—a world where everyone has control over their own bodies and can thrive without division,” she shared with the engaged audience. Beyoncé encouraged voters, especially women, to make their voices heard, saying, “Imagine our daughters growing up without boundaries or limitations. That’s why we need to vote.”
Hailing from Houston herself, Beyoncé has been a strong advocate for progressive causes. She introduced Harris with the statement, “Give a warm Texas welcome to the next president of the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris.” Unlike her performance at a 2016 rally for Hillary Clinton, Beyoncé chose not to perform at this event but rather took a supportive role.
The rally underscored the Harris campaign’s focus on abortion rights, a key issue in Texas following the state’s strict abortion restrictions. In response to Texas’ limitations on reproductive health, Harris’s campaign has adopted Beyoncé’s 2016 song “Freedom” as its anthem, symbolizing the fight for individual rights. The song, from her acclaimed album Lemonade, samples spirituals and songs rooted in African American history, with a powerful feature from Kendrick Lamar. Beyoncé personally approved the song’s use in the campaign, according to a campaign representative.
During the rally, Texas’ restrictive abortion laws were highlighted, with the Harris team noting the harmful impacts on women’s health across the state. Since the abortion ban, there has been a concerning rise in maternal mortality, birth defect-related deaths, and infant mortality, issues the Harris campaign attributes to the previous administration’s policies.
