More than 500 Indian Americans gathered at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale, New York, to demonstrate their support for Congressman Tom Suozzi’s re-election campaign, highlighting his longstanding relationship with the community and his advocacy for stronger India-U.S. relations.

“It took us 24 years to find another Congressman who shared Steve Solarz’s passion for India and the Indian American community,” Bhalla said, referring to Suozzi’s election to Congress in 2016.

Gary Sikka, president of the American Punjabi Society, highlighted Suozzi’s longstanding support for Sikh Americans. He recalled the congressman’s role in helping establish a Sikh gurdwara in Glen Cove and his willingness to speak out against discrimination targeting the Sikh community.

India is witnessing a significant expansion in women’s economic participation, with more women entering the workforce, establishing businesses and securing opportunities in technology-driven industries. According to figures from the Periodic Labour Force Survey, the Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR) climbed from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 40% in 2025. During the same period, the female Worker Population Ratio increased from 22% to 38.8%, reflecting broader participation in employment.

An estimated 200 million women aged 15 and older were employed in 2025. Women’s contribution to entrepreneurship has also grown considerably, with approximately 36.9 million women-owned micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) registered as of October 2026. These businesses accounted for around 38% of all registrations. Additionally, more than 107,000 recognized startups had at least one woman director or partner as of March 2026.

Women are also gaining ground in manufacturing and other technology-intensive sectors. By July 2026, they represented nearly 70% of the direct workforce in India’s mobile phone manufacturing industry. This growing presence highlights the expanding role of women in industries that contribute to the country’s economic and technological development.

Government programs are helping strengthen these opportunities by improving access to financing, business markets and professional training. Under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana, more than 577.9 million loans had been sanctioned by April 2026, with women entrepreneurs receiving approximately two-thirds of the total.

Financial assistance has also been extended through the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises. By February 2026, around 3.075 million guarantees worth $23.42 billion had been approved for women-owned enterprises, supporting their access to credit.

Market access is another priority. During fiscal year 2025-26, women-owned micro and small businesses secured government procurement contracts exceeding $3.17 billion through the Government e-Marketplace, representing a 27.6% increase from the previous year.

Meanwhile, initiatives such as NAVYA and AI Careers for Women are designed to equip women with skills relevant to emerging professions, including artificial intelligence and other technology-based occupations.

Workplace protections are also part of the broader effort. India’s four Labour Codes provide provisions concerning maternity benefits, occupational safety, equal treatment and safeguards for women working night shifts.

Together, these employment, entrepreneurship and skills-development measures aim to expand women’s economic opportunities and strengthen their contribution to India’s long-term development vision, Viksit Bharat 2047.

A 13-year-old Indian-American student has earned national recognition for developing an innovative approach to protecting marine ecosystems. Raji Doshi, an eighth-grader from Farmington, Connecticut, was named America’s Top Young Scientist after winning the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Her achievement earned her the competition’s $25,000 grand prize and highlighted the growing contributions of young innovators to environmental research.

Doshi’s victory was part of an exceptional showing by Indian-origin girls, who claimed all three top positions in the national competition. Aaisha Asif of Sarasota, Florida, and Sharvi Mahajan of San Diego, California, joined Doshi among the winners. The final round took place October 12-13 at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, where 10 finalists ages 11 to 14 presented their inventions and participated in scientific challenges before a panel of judges. Five finalists were girls of Indian descent.

Doshi’s winning project, ALKACORE, seeks to address ocean acidification, a process driven by the absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide into seawater. This chemical change threatens marine organisms, particularly those that depend on calcium carbonate to build shells and skeletons.

Her invention combines algae, which absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, with aragonite, a naturally occurring form of calcium carbonate. Laboratory experiments and chemical analyses indicated that the combination could support algae growth, improve carbon dioxide removal and reduce dissolved carbon dioxide levels. Doshi also developed a computational model to identify the appropriate quantity of aragonite, exploring how the concept might eventually benefit coastal communities.

Her interest in the issue began with a personal fascination with seashells. Concerned about the damage ocean acidification causes to shells and marine life, she wanted to turn that concern into practical scientific research. Working with 3M mentor Deborah Isabelle, a product engineering specialist, Doshi developed her idea through experimentation and data analysis.

The young scientist hopes to become a NASA aerospace engineer, working on technologies that monitor ocean health and climate change from space.

The other top winners also presented solutions to real-world challenges. Asif developed an environmentally friendly adhesive inspired by the proteins mussels use to attach themselves to wet surfaces. Her research explores alternatives to conventional glues that may release volatile organic compounds associated with air pollution and health concerns.

Mahajan created NeuroDrive Alert, a system designed to monitor fatigue and anticipate microsleep episodes, with potential applications in road safety. Her interests include neuroscience, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Two additional Indian-American finalists presented environmental innovations. Arika Kundu developed LIGNEX, which uses agricultural waste such as peanut shells to help remove pesticide residues from produce. Naboshree Santra designed biodegradable soil-shade balls intended to reduce evaporation and preserve soil moisture.

Organized by 3M and Discovery Education, the Young Scientist Challenge is in its 19th year. The competition pairs finalists with 3M scientists for mentorship and prototype development, assessing their scientific knowledge, creativity, communication and application of STEM principles.

India has reinforced its position as a global leader in flexible office spaces, achieving a perfect score of 100% on Cushman & Wakefield’s Flexible Office Market Maturity Index. The sector’s rapid expansion reflects growing demand from businesses seeking adaptable workplaces, professionally managed offices, and cost-effective alternatives to conventional commercial leases.

Data from Upflex, based on nearly 23,000 on-demand bookings, shows that India’s share of worldwide flexible workspace bookings climbed from 2.2% in the first half of 2025 to 10.2% during the same period in 2026. This placed the country second globally for booking activity, behind the United States.

India’s flexible office inventory reached 88.70 million square feet in the first half of 2026, equivalent to 10.5% of its total office stock. Industry projections suggest that capacity could surpass 100 million square feet by the end of 2026 and approach 160 million square feet by 2030. Increasing enterprise requirements, institutional investment, and demand for premium workplace facilities are expected to support this growth.

Leasing activity has also reached new heights. Flexible workspace providers leased 8.50 million square feet across India’s eight largest cities during the first six months of 2026, marking their strongest first-half performance on record. These operators accounted for approximately 20% of the country’s overall office leasing activity.

The industry has evolved considerably beyond shared desks and traditional coworking facilities. Providers now offer managed offices, customized fit-out services, and comprehensive workplace solutions. Between 2023 and 2025, operators leased 44.10 million square feet, creating capacity for more than 720,000 flexible workspace seats. Seat demand has also surged, increasing from approximately 38,000 in 2020 to an estimated 300,000 in 2026.

Several cities are emerging as important growth centers. Flexible office providers represented 35% of total office leasing in Pune, 33% in Ahmedabad, and 26% in Hyderabad during the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, Tier II cities are attracting attention as businesses explore opportunities beyond established metropolitan markets.

Indian operators are also pursuing international expansion. Smartworks has entered Singapore, while Table Space has proposed expanding into the Philippines through a strategic investment in KMC Solutions. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and CEO Satya Nadella have highlighted the need for stronger oversight as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly powerful. The American India Foundation (AIF) marked its 25th anniversary with an annual town hall meeting at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, bringing together community leaders, philanthropists and technology experts to discuss how artificial intelligence can promote social impact without deepening existing inequalities.

AIF Co-Founder and Board Co-Chair Lata Krishnan reflected on the organisation’s beginnings following the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, when members of the Indian diaspora united to support affected communities. The foundation is also applying AI to public health. Pandey highlighted a predictive health tool developed using programme data from 22,000 children in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. The system helps frontline health workers identify children at risk of undernutrition over the following six to 24 months, allowing them to prioritise interventions.

The event also explored how AI could support classroom learning while strengthening foundational literacy and mathematics. Anchal Sayal, senior global partnerships manager at CodeAI and a former Teach For India educator, discussed the importance of introducing accessible, engaging technology tools for teachers and students.

CodeAI has partnered with state governments in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh on initiatives such as Hour of AI events and AI for Farmers, a mobile-based curriculum that teaches machine learning through interactive activities. The organisation is also developing short courses to introduce students to computer science, software, hardware and AI concepts.

Experts at the town hall highlighted the need to develop technologies that reflect local languages, cultural contexts and community needs. They also emphasised that inadequate infrastructure, limited connectivity and a lack of trust can prevent underserved populations from benefiting from AI.

The event recognised the role of diaspora-led networks in supporting AIF’s work through fundraising, professional development and community engagement. Initiatives led by its Bay Area Young Professionals group have supported the foundation’s programmes, including efforts focused on maternal and newborn health.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will install Retrofit Emission Control Devices (RECDs) on 25 diesel generator sets operating along the Dwarka Expressway as part of efforts to reduce air pollution in the Delhi-National Capital Region.
