In a strategic political move, Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee is set to introduce a resolution in the upcoming monsoon session, beginning Monday, to salute India’s armed forces for Operation Sindoor and denounce the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. The resolution is expected to trigger a high-stakes debate, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee likely to participate on Tuesday.
Sources within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) revealed that the resolution was Mamata’s brainchild. Unless last-minute travel to Delhi interrupts her plans — which now appears unlikely due to uncertainties around a one-on-one with Prime Minister Narendra Modi — she will lead the charge in the two-hour discussion. “This resolution was her idea,” said a senior member of the Treasury benches after Thursday’s business advisory committee meeting.
Party insiders say Mamata has been deliberately shaping the post-Operation Sindoor narrative, pushing back against the BJP’s attempts to claim credit. In recent political rallies, both PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have prominently referenced the operation, prompting the TMC to recalibrate its messaging.
A senior TMC official noted that internal feedback emphasized the urgency of narrative control, especially amid heightened public emotions and the BJP’s bold political posturing. “She has been weighing each decision carefully,” the source said, describing the chief minister’s measured but assertive response to the situation.
Meanwhile, BJP insiders claim the operation has given them the electoral momentum they needed. Internal projections reportedly show a potential 4-5% vote share gain — a number previously seen as out of reach — could now be within striking distance.
“She knows we’ve turned the tide,” said a BJP functionary. “It’s why she’s been restless these past few weeks.”
With the political climate heating up, Tuesday’s resolution could mark a critical turning point in West Bengal’s power play ahead of next year’s elections.
