The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) recently honored Indian-American doctors and philanthropists Kiran C. Patel and Pallavi Patel with the Presidential Citation. This accolade recognizes their substantial contributions to the osteopathic medical field and their dedication to enhancing healthcare.
The AOA Presidential Citation, one of the association’s most prestigious honors, is given to individuals who exhibit outstanding leadership, commitment to advancing osteopathic medicine, and a significant influence on patient care and medical education.
“Drs. Patel are prominent figures in the osteopathic field due to their support for education, research, and philanthropy. Their efforts have enabled many osteopathic medical students to achieve their goals and help address health care shortages in America. We are grateful to have such a wonderful family partnering with us,” said AOA President Dr. Ira P. Monka.
Expressing his gratitude, Kiran Patel stated, “This is a prestigious award that I am accepting on behalf of a community of champions for the osteopathic profession. It is a testament to the collective efforts of many dedicated professionals and the support of the osteopathic community.”
The Patels established the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM) to create and support educational programs aimed at developing the next generation of compassionate and skilled osteopathic physicians.
Trained at Columbia University, Kiran and Pallavi Patel launched a successful medical practice management company in Tampa in 1982, expanding it into 14 practices. They also founded WellCare, which became Florida’s largest Medicaid HMO and later grew into the WellCare Management Group with over $1 billion in revenue. In 2003, they sold their business interests to focus on global philanthropic initiatives in health, education, and culture.
Kiran Patel, who studied medicine at Gujarat University and completed his residency and fellowship in the U.S., currently chairs Visionary Medical Systems. He is also actively involved in philanthropic efforts through the Drs. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel Family Foundation, supporting communities affected by disasters in India and Puerto Rico.
The AOA, representing more than 151,000 osteopathic physicians and medical students, is dedicated to promoting public health, encouraging scientific research, and advancing the unique philosophy and practice of osteopathic medicine. The association supports its members through various initiatives, including advocacy, continuing education, and professional development opportunities.
