Progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is expected to accelerate as almost all the required land has been acquired. Out of the 28 contract packages for the project, 23 have already been awarded. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that the delay in land acquisition, especially in Maharashtra, has affected the project. However, as of June 2023, about 429.53 hectares of land have been acquired out of the total requirement of approximately 430.45 hectares.
The final timeline and cost of the project will be determined after all contracts are finalized and land acquisition is complete. So far, the project has incurred an expenditure of Rs. 45,621.17 crore.
According to the Joint Feasibility Study report of 2015, the estimated cost of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor was Rs. 1,08,000 crore, and the completion period was expected to be 8 years. However, the timeline is contingent on land availability and site preparation.
The project status update includes the following:
– All civil contracts have been awarded.
– The project has been divided into 28 Contract packages, with 23 packages already awarded.
– Significant progress has been made in terms of foundation and pier completion, Girder Casting, Girder Launching (Superstructure), and utility shifting.
The ambitious bullet train project, a joint venture between India and Japan, aims to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from 7 hours to just 2 hours, revolutionizing the transportation sector in the country.
